It has been raining in Southern California. Not just a drizzle or the light showers. Oh, no. This is real, honest-to-goodness, I-mean-business rain. Last night, I drifted off to sleep with the sound of wind howling and rain drops splattering against my window. Although a drier La Nina season was predicted for 2022-2023, the opposite has proved true. The second, or maybe third, Atmospheric River event of the past four weeks or so has been predicted for next week. Los Angeles ABC7 meteorologist Dallas Raines has forecast a clear weekend, at least through Saturday morning. However, the new storm that is set to pass through Southern California starting Sunday afternoon is fabulous news to me. (The rain is good news for the state, too.)

As Eddie Rabbitt sings in his hit song, “I Love a Rainy Night,” rain quite simply makes me feel good. It is my subconscious known, my subconscious mental script for contentment, my happy place. It is the climate and weather that makes me feel comfortable and cozy and relaxed. It reminds me of happy memories doing my post-graduate degree at Goldsmiths College in London, studying and writing my research thesis with rain pounding against the windows at the college library or in the front room of the house where I lived with friends. It washes the metaphoric cobwebs out of my mind the way it cleans the months-old accumulation of dirt and dust off of the leaves and plants outside. The fresh, clean air inspires me to get down to work, to do my best work. Best of all, rain gives me an opportunity—okay, an excuse—to really enjoy some down time and relax. I allowed myself to sleep in this morning. Then, I spent a good part of the afternoon catching up on social media, promoting my special for a free 30-minute phone or Zoom consultation. Tonight, I will curl up and finish reading a book.

Although the heavy rain is not conducive to riding my horse, it is great for hanging out with Galahad at the barn. In addition to cleaning his stall and grooming (especially cleaning his hooves) when it is stormy, I can still go out and read aloud to him while he munches hay in his stall. Yes, there is more to enjoy having my own horse than just riding, as other horse lovers will appreciate. I still have some early spring-cleaning tasks to do, such as get tax information to present to my accountant next month and complete a couple continuing-education courses, so the coming rainstorm will be a good opportunity to do that.

Soon I will be able to fall asleep listening to the music of rain on my windows and maybe, fingers crossed, the sound of thunder rumbling and crackling overhead.

Oh, how I love a rainy night…

Oh, I Love a Rainy Night! 2.0

It’s raining in Southern California. Not just a drizzle or the light showers. Oh, no. This is real, honest-to-goodness, I-mean-business rain. I woke up to the rumbling of thunder and the sound of rain drops splattering against the roof and my windows. This is already the second or third big storm to hit Southern California this season, and (apparently) there is another El Niño event predicted for this year. Los Angeles ABC7 meteorologist Dallas Raines has predicted a series of storms to pass through Southern California through the weekend, and I couldn’t be happier about it.

Just like Eddie Rabbitt sings in his hit song, “I Love a Rainy Night,” rain quite simply makes me feel good. It is my subconscious known, my happy place. It is the climate and weather that makes me feel comfortable and cozy and relaxed. It reminds me of happy memories doing my post-graduate degree at Goldsmiths College in London, studying and writing my research thesis with rain pounding against the window panes at the college library or in the front room of the house where I lived with friends. Then, I spent a good part of the afternoon catching up on social media, promoting my special offer to help lose weight through hypnotherapy. Tonight, I will curl up and finish reading a book I’ve been working on.

Although the heavy rain is not conducive to riding my horse, it is great for hanging out with Galahad in his barn. In addition to cleaning his stall and grooming (especially cleaning his hooves), I like to read to him and spend some quality time with my boy. Yes, there is more to enjoy having my own horse than just riding, as other horse lovers will appreciate. Later, at home, I still have some early spring-cleaning tasks to do, such as get tax information to present to my accountant next month. I have enrolled in two more continuing-education courses, so this weekend will be a good opportunity to start those.

But, tonight—and all weekend—I will fall asleep listening to the music of rain on my windows and, fingers crossed, the sound of thunder rumbling and crackling overhead.

I love rain…

April Showers

“April showers bring May flowers…”

I forget the rest of the lines to that saying, or maybe there aren’t any. Anyway, spring flowers are growing like gangbusters in Southern California right now, as they have been since mid-February. Although strong, El Nino-fueled weather systems were predicted to hit California this year, most of the heavy rain (and “wintry feeling) headed up to and stayed in Northern California, Oregon, Washington and the western coast of Canada. Instead, grass, weeds and early blooms started blooming much earlier than usual. Even Death Valley National Park has been treated to a carpet of beautiful desert blossoms.

The unusual weather has also produced a phenomenon that I can’t remember experiencing since I was a student in London: April showers. I vividly remember the first time I was caught in one of those unexpected (to me) and unusual deluges. A friend and I were chatting in a park when the clear blue sky opened up and heavy drops of rain started to pelt down. For a woman who grew up in Southern California, this phenomenon definitely counted as a subconscious “unknown.” There was nothing in my conscious mind or subconscious experience—I knew you need clouds to produce rain!—that prepared me for that moment. Rain didn’t happen in Southern California unless there were plenty of clouds around. My friend just smiled at my bewildered expression and reassured me that it was just an April shower and would stop in a minute or so. Which it did, and then started again a little while later. From that day I learned to accept and expect rain to come down anytime and anywhere, including from a clear blue sky. Since I like rain and changes in weather, it was kind of fun to be in on Mother Nature’s annual seasonal joke.

To be honest, I hadn’t thought much about April showers until this February. My sister and I were coming back from a walk around her neighborhood when plump drops of water once again started to fall from a clear, blue sky. There were a few heavy rain-clouds nearby but definitely not overhead; nonetheless, we were in the middle of an “April shower.” Like me two decades previously, my sister looked completely puzzled and disbelieving as she gazed at the sky. “There aren’t even any clouds!” she said.

I was treated to another April shower earlier this afternoon when I was at the barn, grooming my horse. Once again, there were some heavy clouds in the distance but overhead the sky was blue and spitting tiny drops of water. Galahad cocked a hind foot and nickered softly as I ran the shedding blade over his coat. I knew that the light shower would make his hair stick to my skin and clothes, but I didn’t care. It would be April in two days and these showers were a beloved rite of spring that I came to enjoy when I lived in England.

Anyway, all those spring blossoms need water to bloom, and I doubt there will be much more rain coming our way after this. Bring on those pre-April showers!
